A new, new name!

We were excited to publish Pattern App few weeks ago after we had spent months and months building it. However, soon after the relaunch we were contacted by Matthew Smith from Pattern Tap. Matthew’s concern was that the name “Pattern App” was too close to “Pattern Tap” and he asked us to rename it.

Since then we have been trading few emails privately with Matthew. The issue has been also discussed on Twitter and in response at our blog, and both sides had valid arguments. However, we understand that debating the similarity of the names leads nowhere; it just takes a lot of time. We want to leave this dispute behind us so we both can move on and concentrate on building great products.

Pattern App will become Patternry

Patternry as a name can be seen as a short form of the UI Pattern Factory, and as a such is a nice reminder of the past. The name Patternry is formed out of the word Pattern and -ry suffix. The -ry suffix is defined as “a place of business or other practice, class of collections of things, and practice or occupation”. These are all definitions that match our vision of Patternry being a place where people can gather to find their design patterns and to practice the noble art of design patterns.

The guys from Metallica made a great song to support the launch of Patternry. I especially like the part where Hetfield sings

“Hypnotizing power

Crushing all that cower

Patternry is here to stay”

Anyhow, a great band and great lyrics. Just a shame they mis-spelled Patternry.

What this means to our users

We are not that happy to change the name again as it will have some effect to our users and has required a lot of work which we could have spent better developing our service further.

Those users who have signed up using OpenID might have sign in problems. In that case, reset your password and link your OpenID to your Patternry account again. We sincerely apologize for this and we will do our best to make up for this in the future.

All links should work as we direct patternapp.com URLs to patternry.com.

New feature: Users can add links to patterns

The work put to Pattern App has brought us tens of thousands of visitors in the last few weeks. Now we want to present something new for those visitors as we will allow people to add links to our patterns. This is the first small step in turning Patternry to be more social and interactive.

See you at Patternry!

P.S. As always, your feedback and comments are welcome.
